The GemStone

Each gemstone has its own unique characteristics and beauty and have been treasured down through the ages.
 Stone Description
Amber
Amber
Approximately 30 and 90 million years ago, large stands of forests in some parts of the world began to seep globs of sticky resin! This aromatic resin oozed down the sides of trees, as well as filling internal fissures, trapping debris, such as seeds, leaves, feathers and insects. As geologic time progressed the forests were buried and the resin hardened into a soft, warm, golden gem, known as amber. Amber is the fossilised resin of ancient trees which forms through a natural polymerisation of the original organic compounds.
Amethyst
Amethyst
Amethyst, the traditional birthstone for the month of February, is available in small and large sizes, although as with all gemstones, very large sizes in rich, deep colours have always been rare. Designers celebrate Amethyst as the ideal choice for jewellery because of its regal colour, variety of sizes and shapes, affordability, and wide tonal range, from light to dark purple.
Blue Topaz
Blue Topaz
Topaz is the enduring symbol of love and affection. Wear me and I will bring you friendship and ensure the fidelity of the one you love.
Citrine
Citrine
Citrine, derived from the French word for lemon, in all of its glorious golden and yellow colours, is the most affordable of all the earth-toned gemstones and is the alternate birthstone for November.
Cubic Zirconia (CZ)
Cubic Zirconia (CZ)
Cubic zirconia has been established as an affordable diamond substitute as well as an important fashion staple in itself. The CZ story began in 1937, when the cubic form of zirconium oxide, (CZ for short) was discovered by two German mineralogists. However, it wasn't until the 1970's when Soviet scientists learned how to "grow" this mineral in a laboratory that it gradually became popular with jewellery designers. CZ really took off in the 1980's, when Swarovski & Co., a world-renowned Austrian producer of leaded crystal, began producing cubic zirconia for mass consumption. Recently, new developments in CZ production have led to a sparkling new array of CZs in every colour of the rainbow. Gemologists agree that Cubic Zirconia is the finest diamond simulant because it comes closer than any other gem material to matching the characteristics of a diamond.
Garnet
Garnet
Garnet, so called by the ancient Greeks because my colour reminded them of the "granatum," or pomegranate seed. Noah used my inner fire as a lamp on his bow as he cast about on the ocean. I trace my roots as a gemstone to the Nile Delta in 3100 B.C., where Egyptian artisans would craft me into beads or inlay me into hand-wrought jewellery.
Mother of Pearl (MOP)
Mother of Pearl (MOP)
MOP is the iridescent substance that forms the lining of the shells of some fresh-water and some salt-water molluscs. Like the pearl it is a secretion of the mantle, composed of alternate layers of calcium carbonate and conchiolin. Among the chief sources are the pearl oyster, found in warm and tropical seas, chiefly in Asia; the fresh-water pearl mussel, which lives in many rivers of the United States and Europe; and the abalone of California, Japan, and other Pacific regions.
Onyx
Onyx
Onyx is a chalcedony quartz with a fine texture. It comes in many colours, but the black variety being most commonly used in jewellery. Some onyx also displays white bands or ribbons against a darker background. If the layers are even, this type of onyx is carved into cameos.
Peridot
Peridot
Like many of the world's popular coloured gemstones, Peridot has been credited with a host of magical powers and healing properties, such as protection against nightmares and possessing the power to ward off evil. The BirthStone for August, Peridot is also the suggested gemstone gift for the sixteenth wedding anniversary.
Sapphire
Sapphire
Sapphire, beloved for centuries as the ultimate blue gemstone. The ancient Persian rulers believed that it was my reflection that gave blue colour to the heavens, indeed, my very name in Latin, "Sapphiru", means blue. Sapphire has been credited with profound powers such as the ability to protect the wearer against poisons and evil spirits.
Turquoise
Turquoise
Turquoise, with its robin's egg blue hue, is among the oldest known gemstones. It graced the necks of Egyptian Pharaohs and adorned the ceremonial dress of early native Americans and has been attributed with healing powers as well as promoting the wearer's status and wealth.
